MOST FREQUENT QUESTIONS - VOLUNTEER

How long is a NEEM humanitarian trip?

NEEM volunteers can spend anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 weeks in-country. Program costs vary based on location. See Become a Volunteer for program specifics.

How do I apply?

NEEM volunteers must be 18 years or older. Prospective volunteers must fill out an application on the website. There is a $12 non-refundable application fee necessary for completion of the application. When you are applying, you will need to choose the correct country application & have a current resume to upload. See Become A Volunteer for program specifics.

How does NEEM help prepare & train volunteers?

Prior to departure, participants will attend, or Skype in, a mandatory training with NEEM to prepare them for their in-country experience. Information on when and where the training will be held will be sent out to the volunteers in advance. Training topics include, but are not limited to: safety and security, intercultural communication, country-specific information, & malnutrition assessment/nutrition education curriculum.

If you are chosen as a volunteer, what are the payment options?

If you're selected as a volunteer you will be required to pay half the cost within one week of being notified of acceptance. After that you will have two weeks to pay the remaining half. If your financial situation requires a special request, please make sure you state it in your application.

What about health and safety?

Due to an application process you can rest assured that other volunteers will have high standards, maturity, and qualifications. We guarantee safe living arrangements with team leaders always present. Medical care is available in every city. Once accepted into the program, an info session will be held including safety tips and education on cultural differences.

Will I be useful if I have no experience in nutrition?

YES! NEEM programs are open to students, professionals, men, women, and anyone who wants to make a difference! The nutrition education volunteers provide will be culturally appropriate. Registered Dietitians will be available to guide & assist the lessons. They will answer any questions you might have. Aside from nutrition services, you may have the opportunity to work in a team alongside local craftsmen to help with renovation projects, teach English to local children, organize activities for the children, and participate in woman empowerment services. If you are ready to work hard with a diverse team then we can't wait to meet you!

What are the costs?

NEEM prides itself on low fees. Costs vary depending on location and trip, but estimated between $1200-2000. You can find the exact cost for the current trip under the Become A Volunteer tab. Cost includes accommodations, ground transportation including airport pickup/drop off, guided tours and group excursions, and 3 meals per day. We suggest volunteers plan to spend $1,000-1,500 on travel and personal purchases.

What if I have allergies or special medical conditions?

Don’t worry! Please be honest when filling out your application so we know what to expect and how to best accommodate.

How do I become a Registered Dietitian team lead?

NEEM has a team of Registered Dietitians that provide leadership and assistance to NEEM volunteers. They compile the malnutrition assessments and diagnose malnutrition, deficiencies, and more. They receive extensive training upon selection. Team leads work closely with team members to welcome them and prepare them for their in-country experience. In country, they act as a liaison between NEEM and our in-country partners. To become a team lead, international travel and leadership experience is required. Previous experience on a NEEM humanitarian trip prior to becoming a team lead is preferred, but not required. As a team lead, your program fee will be discounted. This experience is great for all Registered Dietitians alike to network, and become professionals in this area of work. Email neem.nonprofit@gmail.com stating your interest in joining the team, a personal bio, and work experience.

Aside from in-country volunteering, how can I become involved with NEEM?

Our volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to: communications intern, social media assistant, marketing assistant, videographer and/or photographer, graphic designer, and Registered Dietitian team lead.
